Program Planning Guide

Salem Middle School
Homework Policy

At Salem Middle school , assignments will be an extension of classroom learning. They will relate specifically to skills, concepts, and facts introduced in the classroom, keeping in mind the availability of resources and materials. Due to the individual abilities, performance levels, and motivation of students, it is impossible to dictate specific time parameters for homework. Adequate time and intermediate benchmarks should be provided for the preparation of long-term assignments. The nature of assignments will vary but could include reading for information, writing in a variety of forms, preparing for an oral presentation, practicing specific skills introduced in class, or working on a project. Teams will work to coordinate the types and amount of homework given on a regular basis.

General Expectations:

•  Homework should be a continuation and an extension of the class instruction. It should be assigned regularly and on an appropriate level for the students.

•  Homework should be planned carefully so students may participate in valuable experiences that are available outside the school. We need to constantly evaluate the appropriateness of the homework assigned.

•  Though homework percentages may vary by class and teacher, it will not exceed 15% of the total average of a student's overall grade as stated in the WCPSS homework policy.

•  The school agendas will be used by students to record assignments on a daily basis to assist parents and students in completion of work. Other methods of posting assignments are encouraged as well.
