Free Money from Target!! - - You can help - - Last Week!!
Target is giving up to $5 million to schools throughout the country with their Give With Target campaign. Once a school receives 25 votes, Target will donate $25 to that school. After that, each additional vote equals $1 more for up to $10,000 for the school. Simply go to https://givewith.target.com, search for Salem Middle School and cast your vote. You can vote once a week until September 21 (and friends and family can vote too). So help Salem Middle School out by casting your vote.
2012-13 EOG /EOC Scores Delayed
Last week the State Board of Education approved additional time to make a decision regarding setting new achievement levels on the state’s new end-of-grade and end-of-course tests given for the first time in 2012-13. This means that student reports will not be available before November.
Volunteers Needed for Magazine Sales Main Event Party
We need some help taking main event tickets at the door and working the prize tables. The time slots are divided up by grade level.
State Fair Tickets and School Support!
Here's an excellent way for you to get your advance gate tickets to the NC State Fair (Oct. 17-27) and help Salem Middle School raise money.
For every $7.00 adult advance ticket sold, two dollars will be returned to the school. For every child's advance ticket ($3.00), one dollar will be returned to the school. Please feel free to forward this email to relatives, neighbors, and friends. The more tickets sold from Salem Middle School supporters, the more money is returned to the school. To be sure the money goes back to us, you will need to enter our school code number, which is 551 and is also available from the advance ticket online site:
Don't wait too late: Once the fair starts, the ticket price increases, and no money comes back to us.

Attention 8th Grade Parents
STEM & Wake Early College High School Information Sessions
An information session will be held at Salem Middle School on Monday, October 28th from 7 – 8 pm in the auditorium. Representatives from each of these schools will be on campus to speak with parents from Apex, Davis Drive, Mills Park and Salem Middle Schools.
Parents, please remember to go in and register as a volunteer during August or September. WCPSS typically keeps the volunteer application system up and running through the beginning of October. Volunteers must go into the volunteer registration system and reactivate each year beginning July 1st. This only takes a few minutes and you can reactivate at one school even if you have students in multiple schools. Simply remember to list each child you have and each school they are attending. You can access the volunteer registration application on the WCPSS intranet using computers in the media center.
Do you Shoparoo?
The SMS PTA is partnering with Shoparoo to earn merchant rewards for our school. This iPhone or Android app can be downloaded for free from www.shoparoo.com or facebook.com/shoparoo.
Harris Teeter VIC Card Link Up Time
All Harris Teeter VIC cards have to be re-linked each year beginning on August 1st. Harris Teeter will donate 2% of your Private Label purchases when you use your VIC card. This is such an easy way to raise funds for Salem Middle School. If you filled out a card link form in the start-up packet, our Ways and Means VP will use those forms to re-link your card. If you prefer to re-link on your own, the SMS id# is 5627.
Would you like to help out with the PTA?
The SMS PTA is looking for a volunteer to help with the following position:
Can you help show our children what we value?
Salem Middle School is in the process of forming a Wellness Committee. We are encouraging parents, staff, administrators and students to become a part of this committee. WCPTA Council believes that health should be a priority in schools. We want to form the Wellness Committee to assess the school’s needs then make long and short term goals. If you are interested in the overall well-being of your child, then this committee is for you. Our Committee will have 3 divisions, Garden/Physical Activity/Food (food education). Which one are you or your child interested in?
Please contact Joelle Gillooly with any questions or to become a part of the Wellness Committee.

Our school newsletter is going ALL green this year! Every quarter, the newsletter will be published online on the PTA website. * However, if your family wishes to receive a paper copy of the newsletter, please pick up a form in the front office. Fill it out with your name and address and return it to the front office. The newsletter editor will send you a copy in the mail.
Cell Phone PolicyStudents are required to keep their phones in their lockers during school hours. Students whose phone is visible or being used (for any reason) will be given to the grade level administrator, promptly. The administrator will log in the phone to the Front Desk and contact the parent for pick up. No phone will be returned to a student without the parent coming to pick it up. Repeat offenders will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis by administration and COULD lose all cell phone privileges for the remainder of the school year and/or face other consequences (ISS/OSS).
Policy for Picking Students Up in the AfternoonStudents will not be available for pick up between 2:45 and 3:00 PM, due to the frenzy of the end-of-day activities. Please plan any early dismissal arrangements accordingly. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Also, as a reminder, if your student is tracked out, they should not be on campus during the school day with the exception of band and yearbook. Students are not allowed to come and join friends during lunch. Parents, thank you for helping us to enforce this policy.
Video AnnouncementsVideo announcements are used for notifying our students of current news and all dropped off items. When a parent brings in an item, the student's name is placed on the video announcements. The announcements run throughout the day on our TVs located in each room.
It is the student's responsibility to check these announcements and report to the front office. We pride ourselves on keeping the educational time protected and our video announcements eliminate the unnecessary calls into the classroom. It is our policy to ONLY call the classroom for medical and dismissal issues. Any exception to this policy requires a Principal's approval. Thank you for your support.
Request for Educationally Excused Absence(s)At Salem we recognize the importance of educational opportunities that exist outside of the classroom. One example, which occurs every school year, is the "Take Your Child to Work Day".
We know that these experiences are valuable to our students and want to support these efforts. The following form must be filled out and approved my the principal prior to the educational experience. Please print the Request for Educationally Excused Absence form , fill it out, and return it to the school.

A New Way to do ResearchDestiny Library Software is here! We are excited to start the school year with a cool, new Internet-based system which will allow students and teachers to search the media center catalog from home via http://destiny.wcpss.net/ . Not only does Destiny search for books, it searches for websites which are recommended and updated on a regular basis. When you get a chance, log-on to Destiny and give it a try.
Spartan of the Month
Our “Spartan of the Month” program honors one (or more) staff members each month for an extraordinary job well done. This recognition would not be possible without the help of our community. Salem Middle School would like to recognize the following sponsors for their generous donations.
