Project UNIFY "Spread the Word to End the Word" Campaign!

On April 24th Project UNIFY held a campaign here at Salem to help students be more aware of hurtful names and learn to respect everyone with or without a disability!

We have had over 500 students at SMS pledge to not say the R-WORD and to stand up to others who may continue to say hurtful words.

Check out the video (link below) that Project UNIFY created to encourage others to spread the word to end the word and to know that the new R-word is RESPECT!

Odyssey of the Mind for 2013-2014!

If you like problem solving and teamwork, then please consider joining an Odyssey of the Mind team for the 2013-2014 school year. Registration forms are now available in the front office and are due back to Mr. Howe by May 24th. All students, including returning teams, must complete a registration form.

Students who register are making a commitment to their team from the beginning of the year until mid-April. Students will be expected to be at all meetings and competitions. This past year, we had two teams who had a great time throughout the year and did well at competition day!! We look forward to another great year!

We are also in need of parents who will be willing to coach a team. The more coaches we have, the more teams we have participate! Please e-mail Mr. Howe (showe@wcpss.net) if you are willing to coach! Thank you!!

Salem iTravel Club Updates 2014 Plans...with Domestic Trip!

Check out the iTravel Club website at www.itravelclub.weebly.com.

Salem Middle School has a growing itravel club and has some exciting trips coming up in the next year. This club is open to any Salem student and family who are interested in travel. Our trips are guided tours of popular destinations and are guaranteed to be packed with fun, adventure, and learning beyond the classroom.

We are excited to announce our trip for June of 2014; we are headed to the South Pacific!  Our 12-day adventure will take us to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji.  While in Sydney, we’ll take a harbor tour, visit the city, and check out Wildlife World.  Once we arrive in Auckland and Rotorua, we’ll be treated to a duck tour, visit a geothermal area, take a skyline gondola ride, and visit the Agrodome.  The cost is $4130 per student.  More information can be found at http://www.eftours.com/1263981.  Contact Emily Swanson (eswanson@wcpss.net) with questions.

We have a new domestic trip planned for June 2014 (June 20-24) and we’re headed to San Francisco and Yosemite National Park.  We’ll spend three days in the park hiking and checking out the valleys, falls, and peaks while camping in cabins at Curry Village.  On our final day, we’ll check out the must-see sights in San Francisco such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Lombard Street.  The cost is $1997 per student.  More information can be found at http://grandclassroom.com/trips/2014/salem

Our next Yosemite meeting is April 11th at 6:30 PM in the Media Center.
