Citing Print Resources

Use the format shown in these examples. Please be sure to underline the title and use the proper punctuation. Please indent second and third lines of each entry. Also, for your final bibliography, put your entries in alphabetical order by the first word in the entry.

1. FOR A BOOK WITH ONE AUTHOR:

Author. Title. City of publication: publisher, copyright date.

Example:

Steele, Heidi. How to Use the Internet. Emeryville, CA: Ziff-Davis Press, 1996.

2. FOR BOOKS WITH TWO OR MORE AUTHORS:

If more than two authors, separate by using commas and place them in the order listed on the title page. If the persons listed on the title page are editors, translators, or compilers, place a comma after the final name and add the appropriate abbreviations (eds. for editors or trans. for translators).

Author (last name, first name) and second author (first then last name). Title. City of publication: publisher, copyright date.

Example:

Ingram, Robert, Freida Losee, and Philip Wilkinson. Wildlife of Africa. New York: Houghton, 2004.

3. FOR A BOOK WITH NO AUTHOR’S NAME GIVEN:

Title. City of publication: publisher, copyright date.

Example:

Chronicle of the Cinema . New York: Dorling Kinderley Publishing, 2004.

4. FOR ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLE (in well known encyclopedias): Add publisher information for lesser known encyclopedias.

Author (if given). “Title of the Article.” Name of the Encyclopedia. Year.

Example:

Smith, Samuel. “Wildebeast.” World Book Encyclopedia. 2004.

5. FOR A MULTIVOLUME WORK:

Original Author. Title. Editor (first name then last name). Volume number used. City of publication: publisher, copyright date.

Example:

Lawrence, D. H. The Letters of D. H. Lawrence. Ed. James T. Boulton. Vol. 8. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2000.
